Basel, Switzerland
Albert Hofmann was a Swiss chemist who spent his career at Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland. On April 19th, 1943, he accidentally absorbed a small amount of a compound he had been developing — LSD-25 — and bicycled home through a world that had transformed around him.
Hofmann went on to synthesize psilocybin and spent the remainder of his long life advocating for the responsible use of psychedelics as tools for healing and self-discovery. He called LSD his "problem child" — and loved it anyway. He lived to 102.
